If you have ever had a big event or something stress-inducing such as an important speech in front of many people, you understand the importance of relaxing and making an intense moment bearable and enjoyable. There are several ways to work through your nervousness. Though this may not be every way, here are some ways to cope:
- Spend time with pets (if possible)
- Watch a funny video
- Speak with someone you trust or can help you get through the moments prior to the event (or even a trusty mirror can assist)
- Deep breathing exercises, yoga and meditation
A common breathing exercise is 4-7-8; where you breathe in for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds, and breathe out for eight. - Affirmations
Tell yourself over and over again, even if you don’t believe it, that you’ll be fine and you’ll do great and everything will be okay. Our brains tend to latch onto repeated information, so even if you don’t believe it in the moment, the more you remind yourself of that, the more likely it is to stick. - Plan and prepare
- Exercise
Yes, exercise! This will not only release endorphins, which make you feel better, but exercise will also make it more likely that you’ll sleep well and feel more refreshed on the day before your event. - Chewing gum
Sounds strange but research has shown that the act of chewing can increase your alertness and help to reduce anxiety. - Treat yourself!
Do something that you can indulge in, maybe a relaxing bath or that well-deserved cake slice you’ve been thinking about.
